28th International Hanseatic League Convention in Salzwedel
Significance
During the Hansa symposium on March 09, 2002, , Mr Siegfried Schneider, mayor of Salzwedel, and Mrs Inger Harlevi, first deputy of the Hansa chairman, spoke about the role, significance, development and history of the Hanseatic league and the Hanseatic league of modern times, too.
To make alive the international idea of the Hanseatic league, the historical experience of collaboration, the ideas and the mind of the European cities and villages and to support the self confidence of the Hanseatic league cities |the Hanseatic league convention was introduced in 1980 in Zwolle.
Not just advantages, but also the responsibility cause, that the Altmark represents the whole Middle Germany and the capital of the federal country Magdeburg and the cities Halle and Frankfurt/Oder, in the most important executive committee – the Hanseatic league commission.
The fact, that the international Hanseatic league convention 2008 takes place in Salzwedel will bring cultural and economical synergy effects for the town and the region. This double character of these eventful days on a high political and cultural level, forces us to a successful realization.
To make these days a milestone with a lasting effect we have to do long-term financial planning connected with creativity and never ending commitment with many other partners.
Since the application for arrangement of the Hanseatic league convention 2008 (already in 1993 in Muenster), the town has been endeavouring to get many co-operation- and sponsoring partners, because good planning and combination of all these activities and of all participants will bring us closer to our mutual aim.
The fame and acceptance of Salzwedel as a Hanseatic league city has increased during the last years, because of the active participation in Hanseatic league conventions in Visby (1998), Oldenzaal (1999), Zwolle (2000), Riga (2001), Brügge (2002), Frankfurt/Oder (2003), Turku (2004), Tartu (2005), Osnabrueck (2006) and Lippstadt (2007).
The "Werbegemeinschaft Salzwedel" accomplished many spectacular commendable actions,
for example: voyage by ship with an old sailing ship to Visby on the island Gotland to demonstrate the admission of long-distance dealers from Salzwedel to the Hanseatic union after 735 years symbolically.
Up to now we could reach some milestones supported by the job centre in combination with voluntary work and initiative of private employers.
The layout and redevelopment of the waterways through Salzwedel ("Experience of Salzwedel on waterways") is a permanent element of planning, because the historical river- and waterways were the basis for the membership of Salzwedel at the Hanseatic league.

It required so many activities to make preparations for the great heyday.
Thirty-six Millions of EUROs we have spend only for urban development, for redevelopment of histori-cal buildings, for example the St. Mary’s Church, the Monk’s Church, the Stone Gate and other private buildings from 1991 until now. Furthermore we have spend money for redevelopment of the arts centre. And there are so many private activities with regard to redevelopment – rebuilding of the church of Holy Spirit.
Review "Wir haben die 100 000 geknackt" verkündete ein überaus glücklicher Bürgermeister Siegfried Schneider am Sonntagnachmittag. Bei schönstem Sommerwetter strömten die Besucher geradezu an allen Tagen in die Salzwedeler Innenstadt. Noch nie hatte eine so kleine Stadt einen Internationalen Hansetag ausgerichtet. "Ich bin heute der glücklichste Mensch auf dem ganzen Hansetag", sagt Bürgermeister Schneider. Jahrelang hatte er mit seinem Team auf das Gelingen des Hansetages hingearbeitet. Mit 123 teilnehmenden Städten, 106 Kulturgruppen mit mehr als 1600 Mitwirkenden brach Salzwedel alle Hanse-Rekorde der Neuzeit.
"Alles toll!" Mit diesen neun Buchstaben beschreibt der Lübecker Bürgermeister und Hanse-Vormann Bernd Saxe den 28. Internationalen Hansetag in Salzwedel. "Die Stimmung ist wunderbar, die Besucherzahl beeindruckend". Dass eine so kleine Stadt mit nur 21 000 Einwohnern logistisch so ein Fest organisieren kann, sei höchst beachtlich. "Dass aber auch noch so eine tolle Stimmung aufkommt, das ist einfach nur bewundernswert", fügt er voll des Lobes hinzu.
Vier Tage lang herrschte in Salzwedel Hansefieber – die Begeisterung über den gemeinsamen Berührungspunkt Hanse war allgegenwärtig. Herzliche Begegnungen, interessante Gespräche, viele neue Kontakte prägten den Hansetag. "Zukunft trifft Vergangenheit" – diesem Motto wurde Salzwedel mehr als gerecht. Musik und Kultur auf zahlreichen kleinen und großen
Bühnen in der Innenstadt, Empfänge und Ausstellungen, Märkte und Präsentationen, Kunst in alten Speichern – die ganze Stadt feierte. "Es ist einfach herrlich hier", findet Carl Möller aus Osnabrück und wünscht sich ganze Schulklassen nach Salzwedel. Besonders gelungen fand er die Fahrt in die benachbarte Hansestadt Uelzen in Niedersachsen. Möller: "Wir können gar nicht genug Grenzen, ob alte oder neue, überwinden." Salzwedel setzte zusätzlich auf den Aspekt der Wirtschaft. Erstmals fand in Verbindung mit dem Hansetag ein Ökumenischer Kirchentag statt.
Der 28. Internationale Hansetag endete mit der feierlichen Übergabe der Hanseflagge an Velikij Nowgorod im Beisein von Bundespräsident Horst Köhler. Damit wird 2009 zum ersten Mal das hansische Großereignis in Russland stattfinden. Mehr und mehr Städte aus Osteuropa gehören dem Hansebund der Neuzeit an. Neben Marsberg im Sauerland wurden auf der Delegierten-konferenz das polnische Olstyn und das russische Torzhok aufgenommen. Nunmehr gehören 170 Städte dem Hansebund an.
"Anreise, Unterbringung, Betreuung, Programm – es läuft alles so, wie wir es uns vorgestellt haben. Die Städte und die Gäste sind einfach nur begeistert", bilanziertKatrin Wüstemann von der HanseCrew. Bei ihr laufen alle Fäden der Organisation zusammen. Trotz der vielen Besucher sei aufgrund der Weitläufigkeit des Geländes und der Vielfalt des Programms für alle kein Gedränge entstanden. "Bisher haben wir nur Positives gehört", ist Wüstemann zufrieden. "Wir kommen wieder!", dieses schöne Kompliment vieler Besucher spricht für einen überaus gelungenen Hansetag in Salzwedel.
